About this book
The interest in climbing and walking robots (CLAWAR) has remarkably augmented over recent years. Novel solutions for complex and very diverse application fields (exploration/intervention in severe environments, personal services, emergency rescue operations, transportation, entertainment, medical, etc.), has been anticipated by means of a large progress in this area of robotics. Moreover, the amalgamation of original ideas and related innovations, the search for new potential applications and the use of state of the art supporting technologies permit to foresee an important step forward and a significant socio-economic impact of advanced robot technology in the forthcoming years. In response to the technical challenges in the development of these sophisticated machines, a significant research and development effort has to be undertaken. It concerns embedded technologies (for power sources, actuators, sensors, information systems), new design methods, adapted control techniques for highly redundant systems, as well as operational and decisional autonomy and human/robot co-existence. This book contains the proceedings of the 7th Climbing and Walking Robots 2004 (CLAWAR 2004) Conference offering the international scientific community one of the most excellent forums for academics, researchers and industrialists interested in this motivating area of climbing and walking robots. It provides a wide forum of original state-of-the-art contributions from various industrial and new/emerging research fields, presenting a full picture of climbing and walking robots. The conference, held in Madrid, Spain, September 22-24 2004 was organized by the Thematic Network "CLAWAR 2" and funded by the European Commission under the GROWTH Programme.

The little Robot that cleans BIG

Customer Video Review Length:: 1:25 MinsEven with numerous friends that swear by their Roomba, I was still skeptical. How could this little machine really clean enough to impress me?When I received it I was really surprised at the size of it, much smaller than I had imagined. I was anxious to test it out, so using the quick start guide I had it unpacked and on the charger in less than 10 minutes. I do suggest that you consider the location you want to set up the home base, not because it'll take up much room, more just to have it out of the way if possible; mine is under an end table.I decided to start it on a Monday through Friday schedule at 3:15pm each day. It's a time when the house is usually empty and it would be less of a bother. The first time it ran of course I was home and I think I watched it the entire cleaning cycle. I was amused to say the least and it also let me see what problems might arise. I realized I needed to install a virtual wall to keep it from... 4/5 Cricket "Living life and loving it!" Unbias Side-By-Side COMPARISON on .. NEATO XV-21 ... AND ... iRobot 770

I was Very SKEPTICAL about expensive vacuum robots. I have all tile floors. I bought the latest Neato, & the iRobot 770 (non-lighthouses), and slightly liked the Neato a tad more (navigation) at first. The Roomba has more solid 5 stars for a reason. The Neato has double it's sales, but more like a 4 star rating (for true negative reasons?).(UPDATE after 1 Week: my NEATO DIED.. 3.5 Stars.. 'LEFT WHEEL STUCK' LCD message they are famous for.. it actually means that the cheaply designed Wheel Motor gets tangled and busted on it's own internal parts)(I looked at the FACEBOOK page of both companies.. and this re-iterated my proof that the Roomba had more happy operators, was a safer buy, and has less malfunctions... the Neato FACEBOOK page was flooded with constant issues at the time of this review & months afterwards when I re-checked on analysis.... take a look at what it is currently. The 770 is like a Sweeper Robot w/ a small vacuum under it's long brush... 5/5 Frank Peters "Ace of Decks" (Houston TX) - See all my reviews, April 2, 2013

    Life changing product!

I am 41 years old and have had allergies my entire life - they have gotten worse over the past 5 years. I already take Singulair and Claritin but still have symptoms. I was just diagnosed with asthma, which apparently was caused by my allergies. Thus, I decided to wage war on indoor allergies in my house.I hired a cleaning company to clean my house a few years ago - they were horrible. I did a better job then they did. Also, I have pets and am not comfortable with someone being in my house with them when I am not there. My problem is time - I work full time and was finding little time to vacuum (to the point where I was vacuuming only once every week or other week). I have 3 cats and one dog, with hardwood floors and area rugs on my first floor and carpet in my bedroom and hallway upstairs. My house was not clean, to say the least. I just couldn't keep up with it.My brother suggested that I purchase this product. I thought, why not? I did not buy this... 5/5 Sammy "Workaholic" (Philadelphia, PA) - See all my reviews This review is from: iRobot Roomba 770 Vacuum Cleaning Robot for Pets and Allergies (Misc.) With proper expectations set, this is the droid you've been looking for.

We've had this little guy for about three months and have been using it pretty much every other day. I couldn't be happier with it's performance. This little robot is a helper, and keeping that in mind, you'll find your floors stay much cleaner in between your more dedicated cleaning sessions. That's not to say you're completely out of the picture. You have a responsibility to use this robot, and while his AI is quite impressive at times, it is still an appliance. This is not entirely a "set it and forget it" robot. Think of it as other helpful appliances. Your dishwasher is great! But you still need to properly load it, pre-rinse when necessary, and occasionally still scrape some dry food off of a fork with your thumbnail. Your washer and dryer are fantastic! But you still need to make time for use in your evenings, transfer from one to the other, and darn it, they still don't fold your clothes. The Braava, is like an appliance in that way... 5/5 Dan (Boston, MA) - See all my reviews This review is from: iRobot Braava 380t Floor Mopping Robot (Misc.) Good for maintenance, but will not clean a dirty floor

I so desperately wanted this to work. As the mom of two kids under five, my floors remain perpetually sticky thanks to spilled juice, dribbled dinner, and a host of other toddler-induced messes. I was thrilled thinking that this floor mopping robot would help make my work load easier. It made me sad to learn that it did little more than just wipe my floors down. I tried it a few different ways: once with the dry sweeping cloth, once with water and the wet mopping cloth, and once with a swiffer wet cloth. It is super easy to use and after the first time I used it, it seemed to learn my kitchen fairly quickly. The bottom of the cloth showed that it had picked up some dirt, but there were still several spots of the floor that I later had to go back and clean by hand. If your floors are already in fairly good condition and you just want a quick touch-up between deep cleanings, I think the Braava can handle that, but if your floors are genuinely in need of mopping, this isn't going to make... 3/5 S. Good for floors that you cant use Scooba on

I have been a fan of the IRobot series of robot for several years now since originally purchasing a 300 series Scheduler (named Fred) and then later on the Scooba (named Wilma). And although not perfect, I have a few gripes about each, I still like these little cleaning wonders. The Braava 380 floor mopping robot is one of the latest offerings for iRobot with the Braava 380t being the higher end model of their floor mopping series and an alternative to the wet mopping Scooba. Since moving a couple years back and going from a house that had the type of flooring that a Scooba was ok to use with (i.e. ceramic tile and linoleum) to a different home with wood laminate that is not recommended for use on, I decided to look for an alternative to my Scooba. I originally spotted the Mint and decided to wait to see how the device faired and then after seeing IRobot buying Mint and making a version of their own, I went ahead and got the Braava (you guessed it named Pebbles).The... 4/5 JWink - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) The Roomba 500 series almost perfected.

I've got three Roomba 500s (a pair of 560s and a 570), and I love 'em. Rock solid reliable, easy to work on, and do a great job keeping my floors clean. These Roombas aren't toys, they actually clean the floors. In fact I've gone behind them with my Dyson just out of morbid curiosity and all I got was an empty bin. Sure, a Roomba can't pick up as much dirt as a regular vacuum in one pass, but that's why they're programmed to cover the same area of carpet multiple times. And in some ways the Roomba is better than my Dyson. Why?Areas of my house that get vacuumed every week without effort:* Under my bed.* Under my dresser.* In the back corners of my closet where a regular vacuum can't go.* Underneath my reclining theater seats.* Under my basement work bench and utility sink.* ...and on and on...The 600s series is even better, as they include the Aero Vac dust bin, and the upgraded cleaning head module from the 700... 5/5 Ryan Barnhart (Cincinnati, OH USA) - See all my reviews, September 24, 2012

    IRobots never die

This is my fourth IRobot and they never seem to die. The first three are still going strong after several years of use, without any problems or any repairs aside from a yearly new battery. Just make sure to leave these plugged into the wall, sitting in their docks, all the time to keep the battery from dying prematurely. It also helps to preserve the battery to fully run them at least once a week but it's not critical to do that.I empty the dirt canisters and clean the brushes after every use, which I don't find to be a problem at all. I have a Scuba also, the floor mopping robot, of the same brand, and it also is a workhorse. I've told all my friends about my IRobots, and several have gotten them and love them too. One of them said that after a while his Roomba started going in circles but I told him to turn it over and check out the brush and front wheel for anything caught on it and sure enough, he cleaned a long thread from the front drive wheel and it's good as... 5/5 AKN - See all my reviews, October 19, 2012

    iRobot 630 best purchase!

0 5/5 KHenery - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: iRobot Roomba 630 Vacuum Cleaning Robot for Pets (Misc.) I recently purchased the iRobot 630 for Pets and it has gone above and beyond my expectations. I have an 80 lb. Lab and a huge longhaired cat, so I was skeptical of how this vacuum would handle all of the animal hair and dirt they track inside. I have to say this vacuum does a better job than I do manually vacuuming with my Dyson! My roomba carefully cleans along the baseboard and legs of furniture with her brush to remove any and all traces of pet hair, dust, and debris. As well, it has no problem cleaning an assortment of rugs including a large cowhide. The iRobot uses a zig zag type manuever to ensure all 1200 sq ft is perfectly clean. Cleaning the brushes and emptying the disposal unit is a breeze, and it keeps its charge for about 2 hours. After it has finished its cleaning cycle, or is tired the Roomba carefully docks itself back onto the charger. I would definately reccomend this product! 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , September 21, 2012

    Fantastic cleaning robot!

I must say, I'm impressed with the mapping system on this little guy. I have a very large (20'X20') open living room/kitchen area giving plenty of obstacles to confuse it. There's a staircase (which it deftly avoids), an island, a kitchen table with chairs, a couch and a number of tables for it to go under, an area rug and a piece of curved beveled glass on the floor that serves as a stand for a fireplace (which it surprisingly does not ride up on). Also, the room is overall "U" shaped with several entryways. This is the only robotic cleaner that has been able to figure this room out in its entirety. Other things to note is the room has a large fan and high, sloped ceilings and it can still find it's way.My Roomba did terribly. It would get stuck in one section, the Neato XV was OK but would miss some parts. This thing does a great job of freshening up the floor and getting at just about everything due to it's small size! One thing I did not know is the Mint... 5/5 Ryan Mckenney - See all my reviews, September 9, 2010

Mint v Roomba: Which is hte Better Sucker

The short version, for those reading many reviews quickly is this; the Mint has many advantages over the Roomba on a feature for feature basis. But at the end of the day, the Roomba is the better product and picked up a LOT more pet hair. Here's the longer version with the gory details:Both of these are great innovations. True, the Mint is far quieter, cheaper and cooler looking than the Roomba. It is also easier/cheaper to maintain. But the Roomba gets more dust off the floor, despite the fact that the Mint can get under places Roomba can not, and Roomba returns to its base for a re-charge on it's own, as needed. The Mint just dies in place. The guy on here who's review said that he sent his Roomba on a mission and then sent the Mint after it to discover dirt the Roomba missed, would have had the same result if he performed the experiment in reverse. I know b/c I did just that. these two devices clean differently, so any comparison is useless... 2/5 dusthater - See all my reviews This review is from: Mint Automatic Hard Floor Cleaner, 4200 (Kitchen) The short version, for those reading many reviews quickly is this; the Mint has many advantages over the Roomba on a feature for feature basis. First: notice the 5-star rating that I have given this.I agree with all of the 5-star reviewers: this product is worth the price (have had it about 6 weeks now). Time will tell more. However, rather than repeat what others have said, I will describe some aspects that might disappoint you when/if you buy it, but these do not outweigh the benefits.- This does NOT do a deep clean. That takes elbow grease and this, naturally, is not heavy enough to scrub that well (you wouldn't want it to be that heavy). You will have to do a deep clean first. The Mint will then maintain that clean floor. I use it about once a week.- The designers did a generally good job, except for the week when they all took vacation at once and let the janitor decide where to put the charging port. Fights Fur Furiously

We just got our . It was simple to setup and charged in about two hours. We have run it once downstairs and upstairs.THE PLANThe plan is to run it during the day upstairs and to run it at night downstairs. The first problem we noted is that the schedule only seems to allow one time per day. This is ok since we have to carry it upstairs for the day runs. So, we just start it as we live in the morning. When we return, we put on the charger and let it clean at 2AM downstairs.OBSERVATIONSThe upstairs (approx. 1000 sqft) is a combination of wood floors, tile in the bathrooms, scatter rugs (bath style and oriental). Roomba did a good job covering an awkward area. We captured a full bin of hair from the dogs. The only problem is that it got caught in the... 5/5 Jack V. Cleaning Buddy

This iRobot Braava 320 works great on my ceramic tile floors. There is a large (nine feet by twenty-one feet in some places) foyer in this house that gets high usage from two entry doors. Off the foyer is an eight by twelve kitchen floor. Although the kitchen creates an "L" there is no obstruction -- it's just one smooth expanse of ceramic tiles. On the "sweep" setting, the iRobot takes care of this entire expanse, even when the direction cube is placed in the foyer. With the microfiber cloth, it does a fantastic job of dust-mopping the floor. When I first used it, I was fascinated by the criss-crossing patterns the iRobot was making, grabbed my Swiffer, and dust-mopped nearby sections of floor. Later, when the microfiber cloth was in the laundry, I attached a Swiffer dry cloth to the iRobot cleaning pad -- it fit perfectly. The microfiber cloth grabs some of the larger debris, but the Swiffer cloths don't do as good a job -- they're better for dust and fine... 5/5 J. A. iRobot Braava - loved by this homeowner (and her cats too)!

I love this little robot. It's so quiet even my cats adore it; they follow it around and pretend to be scared (Run away! Run away!) when it turns around and appears to chase thrm. Then they take a nap on the sofa while it cleans the room.It would almost be worth the money just for that show every time i use it, but it also does an exceptional job cleaning my hardwood floors. It works far better than the roomba that i had, which was excrutiatingly loud and worse, it was so messy to clean out after it vacuumed i always had to clean the floor again AFTER using it.The iRobot Braava is not a vacuum though, it pushes (or drags) its pile of dust and cat hair along as it goes. Surprisingly it doesn't deposit any of it along it's way. I did accidentally begin (and have continued) by using what is supposed to be the wet cloth on its dry cleanings - maybe that helps, since it's thicker than a swiffer cloth. At the end of a Mint session the dirt it is hauling along is... 5/5 Lush Landscapes (New York) - See all my reviews This review is from: iRobot Braava 320 Floor Mopping Robot (Misc.) This is the most amazing thing ever…

A couple of years ago I bought my sister the first generation of the Mint Automatic Hard Floor Cleaner for about $250.00. Several weeks ago I ran across the O’Cedar O’Duster at Wal-Mart for about $40.00 and made an impulse purchase. I was so impressed that I got my mom the O’Duster for Christmas. My review will not only comment on my experience with the O’Cedar product but also compare the O’Duster to the Mint. Both of these products are hard floor sweepers (note I said “sweeper”. There is no sucking action on either of them.). They use a disposable cloth product to sweep wood, tile, vinyl, etc. They will not work on carpets/rugs; nor, are they designed to wet-clean the floor. These do not take the place of mopping.First, a description of the O’Cedar O’Duster…There is a round plastic center housing that is about eight inches in diameter and a little over two inches tall. It is surrounded... 5/5 M. Nance - See all my reviews, December 30, 2013

0 4/5 Russ - Largo, Fl - See all my reviews This review is from: O-Duster Robotic Floor Cleaner (Health and Beauty) Carpets can help to contain dust. My new hardwood floors do not. I am constantly coughing at night from dust in my bedroom because the hard flooring allows dust and hair to float around. This inexpense unit really helps.Be certain to give your room (floor) a thorough dusting and cleaning along with all of the furniture. Now, you are ready to use this unit. Let it do it's thing every other day and you will really notice a reduction in dust and hair.Easy to use. rechargeable. I would recommend you try it.Note: Ideally, floor should be clear of cords, books and junk. Have it start in the middle of the room if possible. Close your door or it will leave and work on the tile outside your bedroom!! 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , March 27, 2013

Great concept, motor not up to task

I saw this on TV while I was swiffering the floor and decided on the spot to get it, even though it was still too new at the time to have reliable online reviews (it wasn't even on Amazon yet). At $40, it was worth the gamble and I drove to town to get it. It took some doing: according to the O-Cedar website at the time, only two retailers carried it. I tried two Targets unsuccessfully, and finally hunted one down at Walmart.Initially, for the price -- I loved it. Our hardwood floors are low traffic and the dog sheds little, so once I figured out the few spots the robot would get trapped and fenced them off, the little guy worked like a charm. I was thrilled. Until...the motor burned out after five days. Still willing to give it the benefit of the doubt, I assumed I'd happened to get a bum unit and I went to Walmart to exchange it. To my chagrin, I was told that buyers were bringing them back in droves with the same issue and the chain would no longer carry them, period... 1/5 Ochre - See all my reviews This review is from: O-Duster Robotic Floor Cleaner (Health and Beauty) I saw this on TV while I was swiffering the floor and decided on the spot to get it, even though it was still too new at the time to have reliable online reviews (it wasn't even on Amazon yet). Top of the line from Roomba

The 780 is the top of the line Roomba robotic vacuum and comes with all the bells the whistles. Questions that might be asked are:1)Is a Roomba right for me?2)Should I go for the 780 over the 760 or 770?Let me address question (1) first: Is the Roomba right for me? My thoughts on the Roomba are this. It is a great little automatic vacuum/duster but it isn't perfect. Here are the pros and cons as I see them:Pros:* It's an automated vacuum. Seriously, how awesome is that? Who wants to spend a morning vacuuming when they can just let loose the tiny 'bot and go do other things? Not me.* Adaptive logic. The brain behind how it gets every space covered.* Programmable. iRobot encourages tech-heads to program their Roombas to get the most out of it though I haven't and I don't think it is essential.* Date and time functions. You can program when you want the little bot to run it's cleaning cycle.Cons:*... 4/5 D_Strasse "D_Strasse" (Charlotte, NC) - See all my reviews, June 10, 2012

An effective vacum cleaner but has room to improve

I have Roomba 780 and Mint 5200. I have used both for more than half year. Here are my experiences:Roomba 780 is very easy to use. Push start button, it goes. It can vacuum a room without using virtual wall or lighthouse. But if you want to run it in a specific area, virtual wall works like a closed door or wall. Roomba will not pass virtual wall. If you want to vacuum multiple rooms at once, placing lighthouse at different area will virtually divide the area into subareas. Roomba will first finish the 1st area, then move onto the next one.Pro's:- It is great that you can program the date/time you want it to run.- It starts by itself at the programed date/time and goes back to the charging dock automatically after cleaning.- It vacuums the room effectively. Hair, bread crumbs all get sucked into the vacuum. Recently, I had my windows installed. After the installers vacuumed the room w/ their professional vacuum and I using my Miele, I ran... 4/5 FFDR (Chicago, IL, USA) - See all my reviews, May 8, 2012

    Love this vacuum

As someone who has owned many models of the Roomba over the years it was time for another Robotic Vacuum. I have 3 dogs and 4 cats so I have constant fur balls and toy shreddings around my house. I have not been impressed with some of the newer Roombas compared to the older ones as believe it or not the newer versions would get stuck on rugs easier. I did some research since there are now many brands of Robotic vacuums on the market to choose from.I have tile throughout with occasional area rugs. I got my Neato last night and already I'm in love! Compared to the Roomba, it is smart! it scans my rooms, knows where to go, when it's time to charge it returns to it's base remembering where it left off. All the while it hasn't gotten stuck on anything and it's not constantly banging against my furniture and cabinets. It has suction which none of my roombas have ever had. The combination of an upright vacuum's beater bar with robotics

I did not realize how big my XV-21 would be until the package arrived from Amazon. Unpacking it, I realized that the robot is essentially the base of an upright vacuum cleaner combined with suction pump, sensors, computer, and battery. The beater bar is as large and powerful as any upright vacuum cleaner. I think this explains why previous generation XVs got such great reviews, and those reviews drove me to pre-order the XV-21.Startup was fast; I just plugged in the dock to an wall A/C outlet, brought the robot near the dock, and discovered that the robot's batteries charge wirelessly. Very cool. After fully charged, I pushed a button on the robot, and it proceeded to clean one floor of my house, requiring several re-charges (it automatically returns to base when it needs to recharge). The robot is very user friendly. It tells you when it needs its dust bin cleaned, its brushes unclogged, when it is blocked, etc. It emits chirps to tell you when... 5/5 Michael R. In a newly remodeled house with laminate wood floors, I see a lot of dust everyday; Roomba 770 has been a good fit. What I've noticed after three weeks of daily use - the pros:- Roomba does a great job in empty rooms; the entire downstairs comes out dust free.- Works well under beds, chairs, wide tables, and kitchen cabinet toekick.- Has great sensors for walls, boxes, pillows, and goes beautifully over heavy rugs back onto hardwood.- Roomba didn't like the fringe on my oriental carpets, but it didn't choke on it like my big vacuum did and kept on going.- The electronic barriers work well, but there is a learning curve on how to place them properly (The signal is cone-shaped). These need 2 "C" batteries each (4 total, not included).- It is not difficult to maintain: emptying the dust collection, removing brushes and using brush cleaner, wiping off sensors, moving it to a new room. The cons:- need to watch Roomba do a room before... 4/5 Holly H (Pasadena, CA) - See all my reviews This review is from: iRobot Roomba 760 Vacuum Cleaning Robot for Pets and Allergies (Kitchen) In a newly remodeled house with laminate wood floors, I see a lot of dust everyday; Roomba 770 has been a good fit. I'm likin' this model!

I saved up and bought this Roomba for my enclosed patio when both of my Dirt Dogs passed away and IRobot stopped making them....sigh....I really miss being able to use the Dirt Dog to sweep outside and in the garage. The IRobot people said this unit would work just fine in those areas, but I'm not going to put something I spent this much money on to clean up dropped screws and leaves! That said, I like this Roomba very much in our enclosed patio. I LOVE the two HEPA filters, which are easily blown out with a can of air or compressor after a vacuuming sesson. They're picking up a lot of dust that my regular vacuum misses....Ok, that I miss when I'm using the regular vacuum, which also has a HEPA filter. They pick up feathers and seeds from the birds, and lots of hair from the cats and dog. Mission accomplished. It does a nice job of moving from hard surfaces (concrete, in this case) to rugs, and cleaning them all well. Technology is really improved in this... 4/5 Janet "intersectionc" (GILROY, CA USA) - See all my reviews, October 22, 2011
